Eric Garcetti, the first ever Jewish mayor of Los Angeles, was sworn into office yesterday, taking a ceremonial oath at City Hall, and promising the thousands who showed up for his inauguration to provide a 'leaner and more efficient' local government.

Garcetti secedes succeeds Antonio Villaraigosa, 60, a fellow democrat who served two terms as Mayor, known for his ability to make headlines regarding his personal life, and enormous personality.

The 42-year-old Garcetti, a longtime city councilman and Rhodes Scholar, defeated Controller Wendy Greuel in the running, though most Los Angeles residents did not even bother voting - not even one in four citizens voted for the elections.

The inauguration also included a variety of festivities, including appearances from Jimmy Kimmel and electronic music vanguard, Moby.

“These times demand a back-to-basics mayor focused above all else on our economy and jobs,” Garcetti said in his address, focusing on the need to re-stabilize the Los Angeles economy, and create as many jobs as possible.

“You’ll have a local government that’s off your back and on your side,” he promised the crowd.

Many of the problems Garcetti will face includes growing unemployment rates, a struggling education system, homelessness, and battered roadways, to name a few.

Garcetti's heritage is rich and as multicultural as Los Angeles itself; he speaks often of his Italian and Mexican ancestry, and of his family fleeing the former Soviet Union to avoid persecution. He makes Los Angeles history by being their first elected Jewish mayor.

Garcetti was sworn in as the 42nd mayor of Los Angeles, a city with a population of approximately 4 million.
