Comedian and actress, Sarah Silverman, reached out to her fans on Facebook and Twitter over the weekend, encouraging them to join her fight in banning the use of bullhooks from Los Angeles circuses and traveling shows.

“Hey LA- Elephants are pure goodness & they’re being hurt. Help w a vote…” she posted, along with a link to the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) link to a website that outlines what a bullhook is, why it’s harmful, and what you can do to stop it.

The website encourages Los Angeles residents to email and call City Council members and urge them to ban the use of all bullhooks in circuses and traveling shows that come within city limits.

The HSUS describes a bullhook as “a sharp metal tool that resembles a fireplace poker. It’s a long, heavy rod with a steel point and hook at one end which trainers use to poke, prod, and hit elephants on their sensitive skin — all for a few moments of human entertainment. The presence of a bullhook means that elephants are never free from the threat of physical punishment.”

If you are in the Los Angeles area, support the campaign to ban bullhooks by visiting the HSUS’ Los Angeles: Protect Elephants from Cruelty page. City Council is scheduled to vote on the matter on October 23rd.
