It could get messy, but it will always be memorable. Every week in the Nosh Pit, we’ll lead the gathering of an impassioned group of foodies, offering delectable dishes, seasonal treats, and other goodies to nosh upon.

We’ll introduce the timely scenario – what to bring to an obligatory sports party or contribute to a spring picnic--and share some auspicious recipes. Spice up a soiree, diversify your dinner, or help convince those reluctant souls that ‘soy substitute’ is not synonymous with ‘stale.’

Recipes are best shared, passed from one sated soul to the next, with everyone adding just their own flair, and creating endless yummy possibilities. At a concert, people shed inhibition and share passion in a moment of synergy and excitement; they will do the same in the Nosh Pit, directing their unparalleled enthusiasm towards food.

Earth Day Recipes

Happy Earth Day Everyone! April 22nd is truly universal (pardon the pun) and there is no one way to take to observing, celebrating, thanking, or helping the world in which we live. We here at The Nosh Pit are getting into the planetary spirit so to speak, in the best way we know how: cooking.

What we offer today is a wide variety of items, from shakes to desserts and everything in between, that give a nod to the environment, focusing on more vegetarian or vegan fare. Below are just some of many alternatives and substitutions anyone can create to make their day just a little healthier and perhaps a bit more organic, helping not only the environment, but yourself as well.

Tree-Trim Trail Mix from Spoonful.com

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups freshly popped corn
  • 1 cup walnuts, toasted at 350° for 5 minutes
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Pinch of baking soda
  • 1 cup dried cranberries

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 300°. Grease a large, rimmed baking sheet. Mix the popcorn and nuts in a large, well-oiled bowl.
  2. Bring the syrup, cinnamon, and salt to a boil in a small pot set over medium heat. Let the mixture boil for 4 minutes, swirling the pan occasionally. Turn off the heat and add the baking soda, stirring until the mixture is creamy. Pour the mixture over the popcorn and stir well.
  3. Spread the popcorn on the baking sheet and bake until it's dry to the touch, about 15 minutes. Let the popcorn cool for 20 minutes, then mix in the cranberries and serve.

Green Citrus Energy Shake from babble.com

Ingredients:

1 large banana, frozen
1 orange, peeled (or substitute with 1/2 cup orange juice)
3 large leaves kale or a handful of spinach
1/2 cup almond milk, vanilla
1/4 cup coconut water
1/2 cup frozen melon (try cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon)
1/4 cup ice cubes

Boost-it – Toss in:
1 tsp matcha green tea powder
1 tsp maca powder (known for its energizing properties)
1 scoop vegan protein powder (try hemp, pea or rice based blends – vanilla flavor will even work here)
3-4 raw walnuts

Directions: Blend ;)
