Jarryd Hayne, running back of the San Francisco 49ers and Australian rugby star, has apologized for publishing two arguably offensive tweets about the Jewish community.

The myth that the Jewish people murdered Jesus Christ has been one that has been dispelled and forgotten for decades, as many people have discovered the fervent anti-Semitism that facilitates this accusation.

This week, however, Hayne raised the topic again by discussing the age-old issue. He tweeted that Jesus “was killed by his own people,” implying Jews.

The iconic athlete came under criticism from many individuals, including the B’nai Brith Anti-Defamation Commission.

The chairman of B’nai Brith, Dvir Abramovich, said that Hayne’s tweets were “damaging, painful and irresponsible.” Moreover, Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation league said that the athlete might not have fully understood the impact of his words.

Hayne has over 121,000 followers on Twitter, and therefore his contestations can go a long way.

The athlete tweeted an apology to Abramovich.
