Barcelona FC striker and UNICEF ambassador Lionel Messi posted a photo of a wounded Palestinian child from the Gaza Strip on his Facebook page this Thursday, calling to end all violence affecting children in the region.

Messi, who has nearly 68,000,000 followers on Facebook, wrote, in both English and Arabic, “I am terribly saddened by the images coming from the conflict between Israel and Palestine, where violence has already claimed so many young lives and to injure countless children.”

He continued by stating, “Children did not create this conflict, but they are paying the ultimate price. This cycle of senseless violence must stop. We must reflect on the consequences of military conflicts and children must be protected.”

The post was “liked” 25,000 times with comments praising his stance on the conflict with others asking to have the post removed.

Israeli Messi fans will recall that last year, the star striker and his Barcelona club flew to Israel during their preseason for a two-day "peace tour," which found them playing football with Israeli and Palestinian children.

The tour was set to include an exhibition match between Barcelona and a joint team of both Israeli and Palestinian Authority players, but was eventually cancelled because the Palestinians refused to play alongside the Israelis.
