Sara Netanyahu, who has gone through some tough times recently following continuous reports about her in Yediot Ahronoth and Ma’ariv, received some good news this week. Avner, the 15 year-old son of Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu, came in first this week in the Jerusalem region’s Bible Contest, and was chosen to represent Jerusalem in the National Bible Contest. He defeated 50 participants that participated in the regional contest (out of hundreds of students who took part) and received the high score of 98 out of 100 points.

At the conclusion of the contest the winner was announced and Netanyahu received a certificate of “Chatan HaTanach” from Ze’ev Alon, head of Social and Youth Administration in the Ministry of Education. The excited parents and brother, Benjamin, Sara and Yair Netanyahu were invited to the stage and joined in the singing of the Israeli national anthem along with Amanda Weiss, managing director of the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem, the other contestants and the judges.

Sara Netanyahu’s family has a long standing tradition of participation in the Bible Contest. All three of her brothers have won top places in the contest in the past: Amatzia Ben Artzi was runner up in the International Bible Contest Matania Ben Artzi won the National Bible Contest at the age of 10 and Hagai Ben Artzi also participated and won the International Bible Contest. Sara Netanyahu’s father, Shmuel Ben Artzi, is a long time Bible teacher in Israel and also wrote a textbook for Bible Contest participants.

The main aim of the Bible Contest is to encourage interest and study of the Bible among youth. It is only natural that the contest takes place in the Bible Lands Museum which is a central partner in instilling Biblical knowledge to children and teenagers, both within the school system and outside of it. Yehuda Kaplan, head of the Education Department at the museum, said in a congratulatory speech to the winners: “The Bible Lands Museum sees itself as a home for anyone who lives the Bible, studies the Bible, and wishes to understand the circumstances from which the Bible grew.”
