Dominic Kennedy, an editor at the internationally recognized English newspaper The Times, has apologized for a tweet he made that suggests that Jews and gays should be forcibly identified, similar to the way they were identified in Nazi Germany.

The tweet was written in reference to a recent English scandal involving pedophiles, some of which were Jewish and gay. In response to the revelations, Kennedy tweeted that most “VIPs” accused of being pedophiles are Jewish or gay, and should thus be identified using unique symbols, like those used by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

During the Holocaust the Nazis forced Jews to wear yellow stars in public, uniquely identifying them as Jewish. A similar practice was used by the Nazis to identify homosexuals, who were forced to wear pink triangles.

Although some Twitter users jumped to the defense of Kennedy, claiming that the tweet was made satirically, many other social media users condemned the editor for being homophobic, anti-Semitic, and sharing values with the Nazi party.

For example, one twitter user called on Kennedy to, “investigate how not to invoke the Holocaust to justify baseless sensationalism. Or better yet: delete your account.”

President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews Jonathan Arkush called Kennedy’s statement “stupid” and “extraordinarily misplaced and offensive.” Simon Johnson, chief executive at the Jewish Leadership Council, similarly criticized Kennedy, calling on The Times to issue an apology for Kennedy’s “vile” comment.

Kennedy quickly removed his tweet after seeing the backlash of his comment, and expressed in a subsequent series of tweets his dismay at being perceived as anti-Semitic or “critical of the Jewish people.” Rather, Kennedy insisted that his message was simply “misunderstood.”

“I do not think it is a coincidence that some of the people being accused posthumously of wrongdoing are from minorities,” Kennedy explained. “Minorities who have been persecuted down the ages, scapegoated and subjected to witch hunts…I would have hoped that the reference to the symbols of Nazi persecution would have shown that this was a continuation of scapegoating.”
