A new trend is taking over the Facebook profiles of Israeli and Palestinian Arabs, with users of the social media site adding the tagline “Death to the Jews” in Hebrew to their profiles.
An inquiry into the new hate speech found that over 300 residents “from Jerusalem all the way to the towns up north” have added the tagline to their Facebook profiles.
Some Israelis, in response to the new trend, began adding the phrase “Death to the Arabs” on their profiles. However, the website responsible for the inquiry have suggested using the phrase “Am Yisrael Chai” (“the nation of Israel lives”) as a less offensive alternative to the anti-Arab statement. “This would be the best response towards those who want to destroy us,” explained the report.
Agreed.
The website also encouraged anybody who came across these anti-Semitic Facebook profiles to take a screen shot of the profanity, and report them to the police.
The report was released just a day after a group of Israeli and Palestinian activists began a fast to commemorate the anniversary of last summer’s Operation Protective Edge. The fast, organized by a group called “Women Wage Peace,” will last for 50 days, and calls for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
The group has said that their goal is to encourage the Israeli government to, “take the initiative and finally propose an alternative to the incessant cycles of wars,” explained the group’s founder Marie-Lyne Smadja.
