Polish police have taken in two young English boys at the site of the former Auschwitz death camp. The two boys were under suspicion of stealing World War II artifacts belonging to the former campsite.

Both teenagers, aged 17, attend the Perse School in Cambridge, England. According to a statement by the school, the two teens were supposedly on an educational visit when at the site.

The teenagers were seen, acting suspiciously, near a building that Nazi German guards used to store the belongings of prisoners. The boys underwent a body search that revealed several items - a fragment of razor, a piece of spoon, a few buttons and two pieces of glass.

The items are suspected to have been stolen from the site, but have not been confirmed.

In a statement by the school, the children “attempted to keep items of historical importance which they had found on the ground.”

A spokesman for the Perse School also stated, “We understand they have explained that they picked up the items without thinking, and they have apologized unreservedly for the offense they have given, and expressed real remorse for their action.”

Remorseful or not, the two British teenagers have already faced an interrogation through an interpreter. While no decisions regarding their fate have been made as of yet, if found guilty, the 17-old's could face up to 10 years in prison.

This isn't the first time visitors attempted to steal artifacts from a former concentration camp. Last year, Italian tourists attempted to steal barbed wire from Auschwitz, while a German teacher was caught attempting to smuggle inmates' possessions.
