In 2012, a group of Muslim Americans in New York began affectionately referring to themselves as Mipsterz - Muslim hipsters, and eventually even spawned a website and official 'Mipsterz' group.

Per their website:

Mipsterz is an organic (you know we had to use that word) community and culture of individuals who want to chill with creative, critical thinking folks. Mipsterz is open to all people, whether you are a Muslim and/or a hipster, or neither, you are more than welcome! We are united not by some identity label, but by our interest in engaging with a tradition in all its myriad forms.

Since its formation, the concept has taken off, with many young Muslims in the community resonating with being hip, cool, and down with the trends - because who isn't, right?

The Mipsterz have also unveiled a few videos in support of their group, including one spawning a debate in 2013 as it featured a variety of Muslim women wearing hijabs, strolling around in New York and Los Angeles (hipster territories), taking selfies, eating ice cream and skateboarding, while Jay-Z's "Somewhere in America" plays in the background.

You know, classic young people, hipster shit.

According to CNN, the video's art director, Layla Shaikley, says the video serves as a "self-biography" for people to learn about their community. A mipster is "a young Muslim American just trying to find a space for themselves unapologetically ... reconciling multiple identities and doing it like a rock star," she adds.

While many applauded and praised the video, some in the more religious community argued that it objectified women and wasn't 'modest' enough.

Regardless, the 'Mipsterz' community was spreading, and many Muslim parents even began reaching out to the group, saying that the video made Muslims seem "cool" and that their children wanted to join.

Shaikley put it quite eloquently, stating that the group "has created a space where young Muslims can have open discussions, share their experiences and not be ashamed of who they are."

If you check out the website, it's filled with tons of hip, happening material like Skrillex songs, memes (like the one below), comics, etc.
