The Times of Israel reported late last night that in an email correspondence with Portuguese-Israeli journalist Henrique Cymerman, Pope Francis wrote, “anyone who does not recognize the Jewish people and the State of Israel — and their right to exist — is guilty of anti-Semitism.”

Pope Francis’ latest remarks seem to further backtrack on alleged comments made to Mahmoud Abbas during a meeting between the two at the Vatican. The pontiff was reported to have called Abbas, in Italian, an “angel of peace.” However this was followed by Vatican representatives claiming that Pope Francis’ remarks were taken out of context and a mistranslation.

Following the confusion, The Times later reported that Pope Francis did not quite call Abbas “an angel of peace” but rather more ambiguously told him, “you are a bit an angel of peace.” Furthermore, attempting to settle the controversy that the statement caused, a Vatican spokesman apologized, saying the Pope’s comments were “not meant to offend anyone.”

Regarding Pope Francis’ comments to Abbas, The Times of Israel report in their most recent article:

The pope recalled telling Abbas in Italian that he hopes the Palestinian chief might one day become an angel of peace in the future, according to Cymerman — although ostensibly he has not yet reached that level.

The Pope’s bold statement about the need to recognize the Jewish people and the state of Israel were written in response to being approached by Cymerman following the “angel of peace” controversy.
