Miles Nadal JCC held it's seventh annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot a.k.a. All-Night Jewish Learning Festival this weekend, commemorating both the giving of the Torah 3,300 years ago, and the yearly re-affirmation of its reception.

With over 70 presenters and 50 educational sessions and workshops exploring traditional texts, Jewish history, and contemporary issues, the all-night learning festival was an inspirational reminder of the talent and intellect our community is so blessed with.

Topics included discussions of the origins of the Torah, the many facets of the story of Ruth, Jewish poverty, Shnat Shmittah (Sabbatical year), Jewish cooking workshops (including shakshuka), Jewish encounters with Canadian First Nations, Jewish ethics, and the role of kings and judges in ancient Israel, to name a small handful.

In accordance with Jewish tradition, presenters invited discussion and questions, and many of the sessions were held in the tradition of Chevruta. Partners read and discussed texts, and shared their questions and interpretations with the larger group. The sessions were stimulating and the discussions were lively. It was wonderful to see lay people, rabbis, educators, and community leaders share their knowledge and learn and grow together. Not infrequently, session facilitators were visibly struck by participants' comments and insights.

The MNJCC welcomed and united an eclectic group of Jews in celebration and in Jewish learning, and in its own way brought the experience at Sinai to Spadina.
