Recently, Ayelet Shaked, head of Bayit Yehudi, was assigned bodyguards by Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein after threats were made on her life. In addition to a series of threats, photos of Shaked dressed in an SS uniform began circulating on the internet, causing an even greater concern for her well being.

According to Edelstein, as quoted by The Jerusalem Post, the photos are especially alarming as photos of a similar nature were released of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin not long before his assassination.

“We were shocked to see clear threats to MK Shaked. We are obligated to protect our MKs from harm,” explained Edelstein in the report.

Shaked is a major player in the ultra-right wing Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) party, leading several highly influential committees, including one which supports integrating haredim into the IDF. She’s also a spokeswoman and hardcore supported of attacking judicial activism by the Supreme Court. Shaked, 39, will be sworn into office by the start of next week.

Her hard policies for the Right, however, have made her a considerable enemy to the political Left in Israel.

“Between myself and Bayit Yehudi generally and also with Shaked, there are deep ideological differences. She has put forth her view that she wants to weaken the Supreme Court, and I want to strengthen it,” said Tzipi Livni, Labor MR and Shaked’s predecessor.

“I hope that one thing happens: that with her increasing familiarity with the legal system and the law, she will understand the importance of these apparatuses to the State of Israel; and the quicker she understands them, we, as an opposition, will have less of a need to stand as a wall to defend them,” Livni explained, referring to Shaked’s lack of experience with the legal system. While many member of the Knesset are lawyers, the fiery Shaked isn’t one of them.

Yossi Beilin, former Justice Minister, also voiced his concern with Shaked’s appointment but admitted that he was glad she hadn’t been made Minister of Defence. As Justice Minister she, “can’t do anything too removed from the law,” he said, explaining how she’d have been more removed from public scrutiny had she been appointed elsewhere.
