John Oliver: Netanyahu Should Campaign as 'Netanyahoudini'

The HBO comedian pokes fun at the Israeli PM's ever-evolving stance on a two-state solution

"That is a Michael Jackson level of walking backwards."

Such are the words of trending comedian John Oliver, who on his HBO show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, poked fun at the paradox of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's words before, and after, winning the Israeli election.

As we all know, in the final days leading up to the campaign, Bibi appealed to the ultra far-right to garner more votes, making comments like "Arab voters are coming out in droves" to vote for his opponent, Isaac Herzog, and that there would be no two-state solution during his term as Prime Minister.

While this angered many Israeli voters, and also, people from around the world, Netanyahu then backtracked (or, in my opinion, elaborated) that he does want a two-state solution, but that many conditions must first be put in place:

"I didn’t retract any of the things I said in my speech six years ago, calling for a solution in which a demilitarized Palestinian state recognizes a Jewish state," Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly, host of The Kelly File. "I said that the conditions for that, today, are not achievable for a simple reason: [Mahmoud Abbas], the leader of the Palestinians, rejects consistently the acceptance of a Jewish state."

In any event, Bibi certainly doesn't seem consistent, and has made it hard to decipher what his intentions truly are, which is why Oliver then likened him to famous illusionist Harry Houdini: "If he somehow escapes this, he should go on the road as Netanyahoudini: Words cannot hold him."

Oliver also compared Bibi to a guy on a first date that would say anything to impress her.

"He just demonstrated the verbal gymnastics of a guy being too honest on his first date. 'I don't want kids. Wait, hold on, do you want kids? I love kids! And in the right circumstances I could absolutely see myself having them. I never said I don't want kids.'"
