Madonna: Europe Feels like "Nazi Germany"

"anti-Semitism is at an all time high" says the acclaimed singer/songwriter

anti-Semitism has been on the rise in Europe, most notably since last year's 50-day-war between the IDF and Hamas militants; since then, there's been a spike in anti-Semitic incidents, and a rise in terrorist attacks against Jews not only across the entire continent of Europe, but also here in the U.S. and Canada, where BDS has grown into a viral movement on university campuses, providing a way for pro-BDS students to ostracize and exclude their Jewish and Israeli peers.

But it seems, at least, like people are finally starting to take notice.

Mega popstar/singer/songwriter/icon Madonna spoke to French Radio on Thursday following the Brit Awards, where she said that "intolerance" was so high in France, and in Europe, that it "feels like Nazi Germany."

In an interview with Europe 1 radio aired this morning, Madonna continued that "anti-Semitism is at an all-time high" most notably in France, but also places around Europe like Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands, comparing living there to the turmoil that Jewish residents were forced to endure in Nazi-era Germany in the years leading up to the Holocaust.

"We're living in crazy times. It feels like Nazi Germany," the 56-year-old singer said, adding that the "scary" situation there made her feel less welcome in France, noting that the country no longer celebrates diversity and freedom of religion.

"It was a country that embraced everyone and encouraged freedom in every way, shape or form – artistic expression of freedom," Madonna continued. "Now that's completely gone.

"France was once a country that accepted people of colour, and was a place artists escaped to, whether it was Josephine Baker or Charlie Parker."

You may recall that years ago, Madonna had spoken about about the rise of extremism and xenophobia in Europe, and even called the far right National Front party "fascist."

"What I said two years ago is valid today," she reiterated. "It's not just happening in France, it's all over Europe. But particularly in France.

"The level of intolerance is so enormous, it's scary."
