Dutch Jews Want Army Troops Positioned Outside Synagogues

Calls from Jewish leaders come in the wake of Hyper Cacher attack near Paris

In the wake of rising anti-Semitism in Europe, and terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher in France, Jewish communities across the Netherlands have requested their government to position army troops outside of synagogues and Jewish places of worship, matching security measures deployed in both France and Belgium.

The plea was addressed by Jewish officials to Dutch mayors, citing the January 9th attack on a kosher supermarket that left four Jews dead.

“Now that Jewish targets in Belgium and France are guarded by the army, we ask why not in the Netherlands,” the plea read, as stated by the Dutch Israelite Religious Community (NIK). “Surely, the threat is the same.”

While many synagogues across the Netherlands have police protection, there are many without security guards of any means. Some have even stated that attendance has decreased throughout the country, with many fearing targeted attacks by radical terrorists.

On Monday, hundreds of both Jews and Muslims united at an event in Amsterdam organized by Muslim-Jewish interfaith group Salaam-Shalom, commemorating the victims of the Paris attacks that left the entire world in shock.

Netherlands native Frans Timmermans, the first Dutch vice-president of the European Commission, attended the event, saying somberly that “If there’s no future for the Jews in Europe, there’s no future for Europe.”

Earlier this week, a study found that 24% of young British Jews believe that another Holocaust is on the horizon, and one that will occur in their lifetime.
