Israeli Barber Makes Invisible Yarmulkes Out of Hair

Shalom Koresh came up with the concept of a 'magic kippa', for Jews to avoid anti-Semitism

An Israeli barber based out of Rehovot has created a new concept for a yarmulke, one that seamlessly blends into a man's own hair color.

Shalom Koresh's Magic Kippa is a Jewish skullcap entirely made from human hair. The barber came up with the idea as a way for Jews to avoid anti-Semitism, in the wake of several attacks against individuals who are visibly Jewish, usually those wearing yarmulkes or sporting peyot, long beards, etc.

In particular, according to Koresh, he was inspired by the recent attacks against Jews in European nations such as France and Belgium.

“I also heard from people who came in to my shop about how when they were traveling in Europe, their guides told them not to wear a kippa while walking around,” Koresh said in an interview with The Times of Israel.

Koresh has been a barber for some three decades, and came up with the idea for an invisible kippa some six months ago. He wore a prototype of the kippa at his salon as he worked, and apparently none of the customers at his shop noticed.

He's since begun selling the yarmulkes online, receiving orders from around the world, including Canada, Belgium, France, and even Israel.

Koresh's kippas made out of human hair sell for $92 (€79). He also sells those made from synthetic hair for $57 (€49).

The Times spoke to one Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz about the 'hairy' kippas, saying it was a wonderful way for French Jews to continue following traditions, but not display them to the public, with tensions running high after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher.

According to Yanklowitz, “It’s certainly better than wearing nothing.”

It's an interesting observation. With instances of anti-Semitism continuing to take place against Jews in Europe, it's become more difficult for them to come out of their houses, let alone dressed in traditional garb. Which is why an invisible kippa would actually be useful to them.

But it's also indescribably sad that this is what it's come down to. Once again, the Jews are forced to hide from tormentors hellbent on their destruction. I'd like to condemn this invisible kippa, declare outright that we will never hide again, that we will not cower to these terrorist thugs.

But with lone wolf attacks like yesterday's Tel Aviv bus stabbing hitting so close to home, it would be irrational to do so. In certain places around the world, this invisible yarmulke made out of hair can actually be of help to a lot of people.
