The Love Jewce: Let's Not Forget the Golden Rule

"Do to others as you would have them do to you"

Let's not forget the Golden Rule

We’ve now been eating our weight in latkes and jelly donuts for eight nights and in a few hours the holiday will be over. We’ve watched the flame flicker on the menorah while the candles burn low.

'Do to others as you would have them do to you' used to say every teacher, mother, bubbe, and elder since the day we learned how to speak. This short sentence is taught by every religion in some way and people around the world try to live by it’s standards.

Others forms of the Golden Rule are:

Love your fellow/neighbor as yourself; Do unto others as you would have them do unto you; Whatever is hateful to yourself, do not do to others.

The Golden Rule is applicable to most situations from war to hate crimes to bullying in schools but what we as people have not applied to the Golden Rule to is love. We live in a crazy world where if a boy of interest texts us we refuse to text write back just to make him wait. In our minds, though, when we text him we want a text back immediately. Unfortunately, the dating G-ds of the Millennials did not make the rules this way. Which leads me to my point this week, let’s defy them. Why wait?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! If all you want is a nice man to flip your latkes for Hanukkah then be nice to all of them. There’s no need to play extremely hard to get, be polite, be cordial, and be sincere always. That’s what you would want correct?

Apply the Golden Rule to more than just dating; use this rule throughout your life. It starts to disappear as we enter our adult lives. We have real jobs, our bosses aren’t the sweetest, and we’re competing all the time.

On another note, be nice to girls too. As women we must stand together and make it a point to be there for one another. Go out of your way to ask a friend how they’re feeling. There’s never a bad time to meet a girlfriend for a martini!

Most of all, if you want kindness from others start by being kind to all including yourself.

“The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the L-RD am your God.”

Leviticus 19:34
