CNN Publishes Offensive Headline About Jerusalem Shul Attack, Apologizes

The popular American news outlet posted a skewed and misleading headline Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday morning, four Israelis were murdered with eight others injured in a terror attack at a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighbourhood.

Almost immediately following the attack, CNN’s Ben Wedeman published an article that offended numerous individuals and organizations internationally. While factually correct, the headline reading “4 Israelis, 2 Palestinians killed in synagogue attack, Israeli police say” failed to outline that the 2 Palestinians mentioned are the assailants that attacked the aforementioned Israelis Davening Shacharis.

The “2 Palestinians” were killed by Israeli police after entering the synagogue yielding guns and knives and killing four people.

Yossi Dagan, Shomron Regional Council’s media relations liaison, was infuriated with the headline, calling it a gross violation of journalistic ethics. He is demanding that the Government Press Office revoke Wedeman’s press credentials in Israel.

Popular Israeli website, Ynet News, worries that international readers are not being provided accurate information, writing “Israelis who were hoping for some understanding, internationally, instead were stuck with CNN in an item whose headline was outrageous.”

CNN has since apologized for the headline, offering a statement reading “As CNN updated its reporting on the terrorist attack on the synagogue in Jerusalem earlier today, our coverage did not immediately reflect the fact that the two Palestinians killed were the attackers. We erred and regret the mistake.”

What do you think? Should Wedeman’s press credentials be revoked or does their apology suffice?
