Norwegian Doctor and Activist Banned From Israel

Dr. Mads Gilbert, known for his Israeli activism and helping residents of the Gaza strip, cannot return to Israel.

A life long ban has been recently imposed on Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert, an openly anti-Israel activist known for working with the peoples in the Gaza strip. On his return to the hospital where he’d been working, he was stopped by Israeli authorities and turned over to the Norwegian Embassy in Tel Aviv.

According to a report by Haaretz, Israel is citing security reasons for keeping the doctor out of the country. However the article claims Norway's secretary of state, Bard Glad Pedersen, is asking Israel to rethink its decision, “From the Norwegian perspective, we have raised Gilbert's exclusion from Gaza and asked Israel to change their decision. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is still difficult and there is a need for all health workers.”

Gilbert, despite his humanitarian work, has been known to speak out against Israel and even claimed, according to Haaretz, that it was known for, “state terrorism at a very sophisticated and very high level,” and that the Israeli army was "using a wide variety of sophisticated modern weapons against a basically naked civilian population.”

He was also one of three authors, two of which were known antisemitic, to pen an open letter to the people of Gaza that was published by a British journal in August, and was extremely critical of Israel. Haaretz also claims that the doctor has been seen justifying, to an extent, the 9/11 attacks on the US by criticizing their Western foreign policy.

While there’s been no news yet as to whether Israel will overturn the ban on Gilbert, whose relationship with the country is questionable at best, there’s no deny that there’s a strong demand for relief workers in the Gaza strip.
