Following a terrorist attack in Jerusalem two weeks ago, where a 3-month-old baby and 22-year-old woman were killed after a motorist drove into a crowded train station, another such attack took place Wednesday morning, again near a Jerusalem light rail station.

A Palestinian man, wearing clothes resembling an Orthodox Jew, drove his car into a group of pedestrians, before getting out of his vehicle and hitting people around him with a metal bar.

38-year-old Captain Jidan Assad, a Border Police officer from the Druze village of Beit Jaan, died during the attack. Fourteen others were injured.

Already, Hamas has claimed responsibility for this vile attack, calling it a "heroic running-over operation."

“We join hands with those who avenge the blood of those injured in Al-Aqsa,” Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri tweeted following the attack, referencing clashes taking place in Jerusalem.

Israeli police eventually shot and killed the suspect, who has been identified as Ibrahim Akari, an Arab resident of East Jerusalem. On his Facebook page last week, Akari praised the shooting of activist Yehuda Glick.

Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for Israeli police, confirmed that he was a member of Hamas.

Witness Alexander Margalit said to Israel's Army Radio that he was driving behind the suspect as he rammed into the pedestrians, calling the scene a "terrible horror film."

Last month, Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an additional 1,000 police units to Jerusalem in response to the increased violence that has plagued the area.

“This is a hard day for Jerusalem,” said Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat in a statement.

“On behalf of the residents of the city, I convey my deepest condolences to the family of the victim murdered in the terror attack and I wish those who were injured a quick recovery."

“I have an important message for the city’s residents: the goal of the terrorists is to disrupt our lives and to hurt and scare us," he continued. "We answer them by showing that we continue with our normal, daily routine. This is the message we will send the terrorists. We are here to stay. We will not budge. We will overcome the challenges and win this battle,” Barkat said, adding, “We will enforce a tougher policy, and win this war.”

Following the attack, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tweeted that “There can be no forgiveness for those who turn cars into weapons to attack innocent people.”
