Academy Award-winning actor/director Ben Affleck appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, during which he engaged in an incredibly tense debate with Maher and American author Sam Harris.

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and former chairman of the Republican National Committee Michael Steele were also panelists.

During the segment (watch it below) Maher - who is known for his staunch anti-religion views, and better known for his criticism of Islam as a whole - and Harris criticized liberals, saying it's "intellectually ridiculous" not to condemn wrongdoings in the Muslim world.

Liberals should practice "liberal principles," Maher said, while Harris added that they'll criticize white theocracy, but that they won't talk about "the treatment of women and homosexuals and free thinkers" in the Muslim world.

Here is where Affleck speaks up for the first time, asking Harris if he's the person who understands the officially codified doctrine of Islam?

"You're saying that Islamophobia is not a real thing," Affleck continues. “It’s gross, it’s racist… it’s like saying ‘you’re a shifty Jew.'”

Harris retorted saying that Islam is the "motherload" of bad ideas, saying that 20 percent of Islams 1.6 billion people are "jihadists" or radical Islamists.

"How about more than a billion people who aren't fanatical, who don't punch women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, pray 5 times a day, and don't do any of the things you're saying of all Muslims. It's stereotyping," Affleck asserted.

Maher commented that while there are many Muslims who don't believe in the theocracy of terrorist groups like ISIS, those opinions aren't exposed, because "they're afraid to speak out because it's the only religion that acts like the mafia that will fucking kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture or write the wrong book."

Continuing its discussion of ISIS, Affleck said that they are being overblown in the media. “ISIS couldn’t fill an AA ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia, and you make a career [talking about them]."

Maher retorted by saying, "I mean if Filipinos were capturing teenagers and sending them into white slavery, we would criticize that. We wouldn't say, oh, well, they're Filipinos."

"You would criticize the people who are doing it, not the Philippines," Affleck replied. "A Filipino kid who lives on the streets has nothing to do with that. These are different things."
