Teen Gets Eleven-Year Sentence for Carving Swastika on Boy

In February, a group of teenage boys in Portland, Oregon attacked and tortured a former friend of theirs, beating him, torturing him and eventually carving a swastika onto his forehead.

On Thursday, in a Portland courtroom, the last of the boys to be sentenced, 16-year-old Blue Kalmbach, told the victim (his former best friend) that he was "very sincerely sorry" after pleading guilty to kidnapping, robbery and assault.

Kalmbach has received eleven years in prison as a result of his crimes.

"It's almost impossible to imagine this could happen between friends, but it did," said Multnomah County Judge Jean Kerr Maurer after accepting Kalmbach's guilty pleas.

According to Portland police and prosecutors involved in the case, Kalmbach spent the evening before the attack figuring out ways to torture the victim, before deciding on carving a swastika into his forehead with a box-cutter style knife.

The accused also shot the victim with a BB gun, forced him to eat cat feces, and assaulted him with a crow bar and cricket bat, reports the Associated Press.

Sitting beside his mother and girlfriend, the victim, who reportedly covered his forehead with his hair, did not make a statement in court. His mother claims that the scar has almost healed but that her son still gets nightmares.

"The biggest question I have is: How can anyone do this to another human being?" the victim's mother asked in court.

Casey Kovacic, the public defender on the case, stated that Kalmbach was in and out of therapy before the attack, and that he was a "deeply, deeply depressed kid."

Why he and his friends decided to torture the victim remains unclear, but, according to the victim's mother, Kalmbach and his friendship turned sour once he started dating his ex-girlfriend.

Kalmbach is the last to be sentenced for the crime. 15-year-old Jenna Montgomery, who lured the victim into a backyard shed where the violence against him ensued, received nearly ten years in custody, while 17-year-old Jess Taylor was sentenced to seven years and nine months.

A 14-year-old who took part in the attack was sentenced in juvenile court to ten years at a Youth Correctional Facility.
