South Africa Wants to Prosecute Citizens for Serving in IDF

The threat of jail time looms for South Africans who have joined the IDF

Authorities in South Africa have warned their citizens that serving in the IDF could have serious consequences, based on the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act, which limits the involvement of South Africans in armed conflict abroad.

This statement comes after a pro-Palestinian group opened a case against Dean Goodson, a South African man they claim has joined the IDF.

The same group plans to raise charges against at least four other citizens they believe are serving illegally in the IDF.

South Africa’s defense department stated that while no official clearance had been given for any South African citizens to participate in the Gaza conflict, they were aware that many could be joining the IDF without government permission.

The country’s defense minister is the only person who can grant South Africans permission to serve in international conflicts.

A police spokesman confirmed that they were investigating this matter at a “high level,” according to IOL News in Cape Town. The statement comes on the heels of an employee of South Africa's ANC party praising Hitler on Facebook.

That incident took place just days after the ANC itself compared Israel's Operation Protective Edge to Nazi crimes.

Needless to say, it sadly seems that the country is operating under a bias against Israel, one that seems to be growing around the world.
