Will Rising European anti-Semitism Lead to a 'New' Holocaust?

European, Israeli leaders hold emergency session after "rising wave of violent anti-Semitic and anti-Israel demonstrations sweeping Europe"

All over the world these last few weeks since Operation Protective Edge began on July 8th, but particularly in Europe, anti-Semitism has reared its ugly head as pro-Palestinian supporters continue to protest Israel's war with Hamas terrorists.

But, as many experts on the issue will inform you, such acts of anti-Zionism, where synagogues and Jews (regardless of their affiliation to Israel) are targeted and where online hatred is spread like wildfire, is essentially this generation's anti-Semitism.

In New York, a cupcake crew called Jews "Zionist Pigs" via their Twitter (which also saw the hashtag #HitlerWasRight trending for a day). In Belgium, a cafe posted a "No Jews Allowed" sign on its window. In South Africa, the ANC compared Israel's operation to the Nazis. In Vienna, pro-Palestinian protesters stormed a field where Maccabi Haifa was playing a friendly against Lille. In Thornhill, Ontario, a bus-shelter was vandalized with swastikas. In France, besides several demonstrations where synagogues were targeted and heavy clashing took place between pro-Palestinians and pro-Israelis, anti-Semitism online has been at its highest ever levels.

In Chile, in Boston, in Miami, in Berlin, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism has continued to appear, which has, naturally, alarmed the international Jewish community .

In Israel on Monday, in an effort to combat this movement, members of the Knesset held an emergency meeting with European Diaspora leaders to discuss this “rising wave of violent anti-Semitic and anti-Israel demonstrations sweeping Europe.”

Like the European foreign affairs ministers who denounced this anti-Semitism, the meeting - chaired by MK Yoel Razvozov and called by the Diaposra Affairs Committee, reports the Times of Israel - was attended by diplomats from France, Greece, Hungary, Belgium, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Germany and Italy.

Though the meeting was "inconclusive" there was no doubt in anyone's mind that this level of anti-Semitic conduct has not been reached in decades.

“Never before since the Holocaust have we seen such a situation as today," said head of the Israeli-Jewish Congress Vladimir Sloutzker. "We are potentially looking at the beginning of another Holocaust now.”

“These events will only grow in scale across Europe,” he continued.

Several other speakers also spoke with caution of the rising wave of anti-Semitism in Germany and Europe that preceded the Holocaust.

The head of Germany's United Jewish Appeal, Nathan Norman Gelbart, said in his address that the German Jewish community is scared "because these are things that have not occurred since 1933."

He made reference to a recent Berlin demonstration where protesters shouted "death to the Jews" and other hateful slogans.
