CNN Poll Shows Most Americans Side with Israel

A new poll published by CNN finds that the majority of American citizens believe Israel's operation in Gaza is justified, and that the State of Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas terrorists.

Four out of ten participants believe that the Israelis have used too much force since the launch of Operation Protective Edge over two weeks ago.

The poll, released Monday, while favorable towards Israelis - similar to a recent Pew study that found Americans are more fond of Jews than any other religious group - also indicates that unrelenting support of Israel has actually decreased among Americans since February of this year.

As another IDF soldier died in the fighting Tuesday, and with over 600 Gazan casualties reported, Secretary of State John Kerry continues to push for a ceasefire.

The new poll finds that 57% of the American public believe Israel's operation against Hamas is justified, with just over a third saying they are not. 43% believe Israel has the right to use the amount of force they have been thus far, with 12% saying they're not using enough force.

"Attitudes toward Israeli military action have been extremely stable over the years," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "In 2012, an identical 57% thought that Israel's actions against Hamas in Gaza were justified. And in 2009, the number of Americans who felt that way was only a few points higher, at 63%."

"Support for U.S. military aid to Israel also remains fairly stable, with almost two-thirds of Americans saying that U.S. assistance to Israel should be increased or kept the same," he added.

The poll also finds that 38% of respondents are critical of Israel, which is up a significant 14 percentage points since February, while 60% of respondents are supportive of Israel, which is down 12 percentage points.

Only 20% of Americans have a positive view of the Palestinian Authority.

CNN conducted the poll through ORC International by questioning 1,012 adult Americans through July 18 - 20.
