U.S. Military Issues New Official Siddur

An official prayer book has not been issued to the U.S. military since World War II

Rabbis from all three major denominations in the U.S have worked to create the first Jewish prayer book issued by the U.S army since World War II.

The siddur features a foreword by President Obama.

Jewish chaplains had been using a variety of different prayer books to lead services, but because there was no uniform text, servicemen and women had to constantly adapt to different worship services as they moved between bases.

With the creation of this new siddur, many hope that this will hopefully eliminate the problem.

The chaplains council, a program of the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America, had received permission to reprint the Hebrew and English texts from other prayer books for inclusion in the army issued siddur.

Speaking on the prayer book, retired Rear Adm. Rabbi Harold Robinson, director of the council, stated that: “We had the ability to move freely through their prayer books, allowing us to create a book each rabbi can use differently. Yet for each soldier, sailor, or Marine, it will be the same, no matter where he or she is stationed.”
