After conducting house raids across several states, German authorities have arrested three men suspected of acting as former SS guards at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp during World War II and the Holocaust.

Over one million people, mostly European Jews, were murdered at the extermination camp during the Holocaust before it was liberated by Soviet forces on January 27th, 1945.

The men, suspected of serving the Third Reich from 1942 to 1944, are aged 88, 92 and 94 and reside in the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg, according to prosecutors from the city of Stuttgart.

Upon their arrest, the men have undergone medical tests and faced a judge who decreed that they be detained in a prison hospital until further notice.

Prosecutors revealed in a statement that several other homeraids are also taking place in the western states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, in their search to reprimand those who participated as guards at concentration camps during the Second World War.

"Various records and documents from the Nazi era were seized, and their evaluation is ongoing," read the statement.

The arrests are part of an ongoing German investigation into criminal Nazis who were able to avoid persecution; last year, German authorities sent files on 30 former Auschwitz guards to state prosecutors with recommendations that they be charged for their crimes.

Following the Holocaust, German courts had only prosecuted Nazi war criminals when there was evidence to confirm they had personally committed or were involved in the murder of innocent victims throughout the war.

After a Munich court sentenced one John Demjanjuk in 2011, who served as a guard at the Sobibor camp, the precedent was changed, meaning that now all former Nazi S.S. guards can and will be tried.
