Anti-Semitic Incidents Down in the U.K.

A new report shows that incidents were down 18% in 2013

In a report released by Britain’s Community Security Trust, the number of reported anti-Semitic incidents was seen to have gone down significantly in 2013.

According to the Jewish Chronicle, these numbers are the lowest they have been in recent years. "The 529 cases in 2013 included 69 violent assaults, and just over 360 incidents of abusive behaviour — a 23 per cent drop on the previous year and the lowest recorded since 2008," reads the report.

"There was a reduction in cases of damage and desecration to Jewish property — 49 incidents — representing the lowest total for eight years, and a 58 per cent fall in the incidence of racist literature compared to 2012.”

As previously reported, anti-Semitic incidents seem to be on the rise in Europe, particularly in France, where the quenelle gesture continues to grow in popularity. As such, The U.K. figures may prove promising (they've also banned Dieudonne, creator of the quenelle, from performing), although they do not go into particularly deep detail, even going so far as to note that the majority of hate crime incidents are not reported to police.

“It is likely, therefore, that most anti-Semitic incidents go unreported either to CST or to the Police, and therefore the true figures will be higher than those recorded in this report,” it reads.

Despite the numbers having gone down, 529 is still a large amount of incidents. One wonders if the trend will continue in 2014. We can only hope.
