55 Universities and Counting Reprimand ASA for Israel Boycott

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations report that more and more universities are condemning the American Studies Association for deciding to boycott Israeli products and goods

Less than two weeks ago, Brandeis University became the second university to withdraw from the American Studies Association on account of its decision to boycott Israel, following Penn State Harrisburg.

Since then, Indiana University and Kenyon College have also followed suit.

Now, according to numbers released by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, as many as fifty-five American universities (and counting) have either chastised or entirely condemned the ASA for its decision, as reported by the JTA.

“This remarkable response is a clear declaration that American academia will not be party to the efforts to promote the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement,”said Conference Chairman Robert Sugarman and Executive Vice Chariman Malcolm Hoenleinvice in a joint statement.

The charimen added that the Conference of Presidents sent a letter to each member of the ASA describing in full effect why their decision to boycott Israel is completely unprecedented and even offensive. “The response is very encouraging and we are grateful that so many took the time during a holiday week to respond,” said Sugarman and Hoenleinvice.

“We continue to urge the rest of the members to speak out against the action and to disassociate from supporting the ASA.”

In late November, the ASA had vowed to begin boycotting Israeli academic institutions as well. The JTA reports that the Modern Language Association will be holding a debate next month where the subject will be discussed.
