In the ongoing debate of Santa’s ethnicity in American news outlets, New York’s The Sun called in a group of rabbi’s to help.

“By a quirk of fate, I’ve found myself tangled up in the question of Santa Claus. Happily, some learned rabbis had once helped me sort it out,” wrote Seth Lipsky, the Jewish editor of The Sun, for the New York Post. “And not just any rabbis but genuine Torah sages of a rank and degree of Orthodoxy that would be unquestioned in any yeshiva."

In an editorial from 1897, as the Algemeiner points out, the Sun broke the news that Santa Claus exits, in response to the letter of eight-year-old Virginina O’Hanlon, who lived on 95th Street and was told by her friends that she should doubt Santa’s existence. “Virginia,” the Sun told her then, “your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.”

“In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. . . ”

Lipsky struggled with the decision to annually reprint the story, seeking advice from the rabbis. “The rabbis were unanimous. They found it delightful, a joyous articulation of faith: ‘Ah Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding,” Lipsky wrote of their response.

The Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto had asked for The Sun to comment on the argument made by Fox New’s Megyn Kelly that Santa was white, and Slate blogger Aisha Harris, who said his ethnicity could change based on the ethnicity of whoever hopes he’ll come down their chimney on Christmas Eve.

In that case, could a Jewish Santa sporting sidecurls and a yarmulke come down our chimney this Xmas Eve? He might look a little something like this:
