Study: 70% of Israelis Support Equal Rights for LGBT Members

A new poll compiled by the Dialog Institute for Haaretz shows that 89% of secular Israelis are in favour of full equality for members of the LGBT community

Support for the LGBT community in Israel continues to mount.

Last week, a movement was initiated by gay rights activist Yonatan Vanunu, who started a Hebrew Facebook group called “LGBTs Demand Equality" in response to the killing of a bill that would allow gay men in Israel to use surrogate mothers in order to have children.

The page attracted over 4,000 likes in less than 24 hours, perhaps confirming that more and more are heeding the advice of a young Bar Mitzvah boy who, during his D'var Torah portion, demanded we support equal rights for members of the gay community.

Now, according to a new poll undertaken by the Dialog Institute for Haaretz, it seems most people in Israel agree.

The poll shows that 89% of secular Israelis are in favour of full equality, with 72 percent of traditional respondents, and 46 percent who defined themselves as religious or Arab, responding similarly.

The poll also finds that 59 percent of those who responded would support a civil union legislation to provide a solution for LGBT couples. Gay marriages, like other forms of civil marriage, are not permitted in Israel, although the country does recognize unions from abroad.

The poll comes following Israeli lawmakers, particularly Health Minister Yael German, who continues to propose bills that would promote the rights of the gay community, including her rejected bill to allow the use of surrogate mothers, and bills that would prohibit discrimination.
