Netanyahu Pays Tribute to Nelson Mandela

Calls the late South African activist a 'moral leader of the highest order'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has released an official statement regarding the death of South African leader Nelson Mandela and paid tribute to him early Friday morning.

Mandela “will be remembered as the father of the new South Africa and a moral leader of the highest order,” the Prime Minister said, “[as] the father of his country, a man of vision and a freedom fighter who disavowed violence. He set a personal example for his country during the long years in which he was imprisoned… He worked to heal rifts within South African society and succeeded in preventing outbreaks of racial hatred.”

Israeli President Shimon Peres also released a statement today, calling Mandela “a passionate advocate for democracy, a respected mediator, a Nobel peace prize laureate and above all a builder of bridges of peace and dialogue who paid a heavy personal price for his struggle in the years he spent in prison and fighting for his people.”

Born in 1918 in Mveto, South Africa, Nelson Mandela dedicated his entire life to fighting the then apartheid South African government. He was eventually imprisoned for his sabotage campaigns against the South African government, spending 27 years imprisoned mostly on an island off the coast of Cape Town.

Upon his early release in 1991, Mandela continued his fight against apartheid, eventually becoming the first black President of South Africa in 1994 and abolished the racist policies of the South African government. Since ending his presidency in 1999, Mandela has been an outspoken advocate for peace, condemning the United States war in Iraq among other military actions.

He died yesterday in his home near Johannesburg of a lung infection surrounded by his family.

A state funeral is scheduled for Dec. 15.

“Nelson Mandela’s legacy for his people and for the world will forever remain engraved in the pages of history and the hearts of all those who were touched by him. He will be remembered forever,” added Peres.
