Last night, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that he will be traveling to Israel in January for an historic visit to the Jewish State; the declaration came the same night he attended a Jewish National Fund gala that saw him singing a number of songs in support of Israel, including classics from the Who, and the Beatles.

In response, David Koschitzky, Chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement:

We were delighted to learn at the JNF Negev Dinner that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is planning to visit Israel in January. This official trip is an important indicator of the dynamic relationship that exists between two great countries, which has grown and strengthened under the Prime Minister’s leadership. This visit will provide Israelis with an opportunity to thank the Prime Minister for his steadfast friendship and support over many years.

The JNF dinner in honour of Prime Minister Harper is greatly deserved, and we join in celebrating their tribute to him. Prime Minister Harper has demonstrated time and again his deep friendship and support for the State of Israel and the Jewish people, often when it was not politically advantageous to do so.

While the relationship between our countries is excellent, there are many areas where the relationship could grow even stronger, for example in the area of trade; we hope that the visit will serve as a springboard for even deeper and wider-ranging cooperation that will be mutually beneficial.

The Jewish community in Canada is immensely proud of its strong historical bonds with the State of Israel and its people. Canadian Jewry is deeply involved in philanthropic activities in Israel and has made substantial contributions to its development since the re-establishment of the Jewish state in its ancestral homeland in 1948 - a sister democracy with which Canada shares many values.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Harper for his efforts, describing "my good friend Stephen" as a community leader and a “great friend of the state of Israel and the Jewish people.”
