Shocking as it is, Europe does not currently have a single university that has a department dedicated to Jewish theology, but next Tuesday, this is going to change, reports The Times of Israel.

In the small town of Postdam, just outside of Berlin, the University of Postdam is starting the continent’s first Jewish theology department, a place for “the training of liberal and conservative rabbis and is unique both in Germany and Europe,” according to University President Oliver Günther.

As anti-Semitism rates continue to rise in Europe, the school will hopefully promote awareness of certain racial prejudices that exist within the continent.

While there are rabbitical seminaries in Europe, this theology school will be unique in its academic approach. In an interview with The Times of Israel, Rabbi Walter Homolka argued that “when it comes to covering all fields — exegetical, hermeneutical, philosophical, historical, and practical — the [new] School of Jewish Theology is unique.”

The school will open on Tuesday with six professors and fifty students arriving from across Israel, the United States, and Europe. Currently, the school will be able to offer bachelor degrees and doctoral degrees, which will help create the next generation of Jewish theological scholars.
