Three-hundred thousand strong, Argentina houses the largest Jewish population in the Americas outside the US.

However, that did not stop Jaime Duran Barba, top aide and spokesman to the mayor of Buenos Aires, from hailing Hitler as “a spectacular guy.”

The comment comes out of an interview with Noticias, an Argentine weekly. Barba compared Hitler to Chavez, arguing that they both had high approval ratings. When the interviewer nixed the comparison Barba agreed, quipping, “No. Hitler was a spectacular guy. He was very important to the world.”

According to Israel National News, Barba’s comment has turned into a legal issue. Federal prosecutor Guillermo Marijuan has charged Barba with voicing approval of a criminal act.

Barba’s boss, Buenos Aires mayor and 2015 presidential hopeful Mauricio Macri, was quick to disapprove of his aide’s statement.

“There simply are no possible positive words for the man responsible for history’s largest genocide,” Macri said.

While the Times of Israel reports that some are calling for Barba to step aside, Macri says that he will defend Barba’s right to free speech.

Argentina has long battled against anti-Semitic incidents. The country is well known for providing haven to Nazi war criminals after World War II, and Buenos Aires was the site of a horrific van bombing that targeted the Argentine Jewish Charities Federation in 1994. The bombing left 300 injured and 85 dead.
