The Israel-less map in 'Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt'

All of us most likely have a positive association to Scholastic Inc. As the world's biggest children's book publisher, at one point or another, we all read books like Clifford distributed by the giant publishing house during our childhood.

But now it's unfortunately beginning to seem like those memories will become jaded, at least, for anyone who believes Israel deserves to be on the map. I know I do.

In a startling and remarkably ignorant decision, Scholastic has published the latest book in the popular Geronimo Stilton series, Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt, and has removed Israel entirely from the book's map.

The Geronimo Stilton books are Egypt-based adventure books for kids; as if it wasn't troublesome enough that Arab textbooks remove Israel from the map, or that Apple's recent iOS7 upgrade lists Jerusalem without a country, now it may appear Scholastic Inc. has joined the Israel boycott.

It seems parents may soon have to be conscientious of the Scholastic books they are buying.

Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt, along with the rest of the Geronimo Stilton series, is originally an Italian children's book series, translated into English by Scholastic, and telling the story of young journalists who embark on a treasure hunt in Egypt.

As the story takes place in the Middle East, a map is provided at the beginning of the book, outlining Egypt and its neighboring countries, including Sudan, libya, Jordan, and Saudia Arabia. Israel, however, is completely covered by Jordan, and there seems to be no mention of the Jewish state anywhere.

Scholastic, since being founded nearly a century ago, has become the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books, with exclusive publishing rights for the Harry Potter series.

A senior vice president at the company, Kyle Good, told the Times of Israel that “The Geronimo Stilton series is published in Italy and Scholastic translates the books for the U.S. audience. I’m awaiting a response from the editorial team regarding the timing of reprints and whether this will be corrected. I will get back to you as soon as I have their response."

Hopefully, Scholastic will wise up and publish reprints of the book with Israel's name mentioned.
