Israeli-American entrepreneur, Judah Schiller, is thinking green with aquatic commuter solutions

Judah Schiller is planning on giving Google Maps a headache in the name of a new green commuter solution: aquatic bicycling. Rather than stick to the constantly changing and somewhat dangerous bike lanes, Schiller has taken to the waterways to avoid traffic and add another dimension to the daily commute.

Last week, Schiller rode across the San Francisco Bay, avoiding the congestion, cars, and looming threats of tolls on the famous Golden Gate Bridge for the "dynamic terrain" of open water. But this ride is more than just a stunt, Schiller sees aquatic bicycling as a viable solution for commuters and will be riding across New York’s Hudson River to show off this new way of thinking about getting to work on time.

Just imagine: when you’re planning your daily commute on Google, you could click an Aquatic Bike tab and watch as your commute time drops when you take a virtual water bike lane.

Schiller, who made aliyah to Israel in his early twenties, founded design innovation firm Aiko Agency to change the way people think and live, and his work on the aquatic bike is one of his biggest accomplishments. Schiller’s bike actually uses a device, developed by Italian company SBK, that turns any bike into a water bike.

"It basically makes your bike amphibious," Schiller told The Times of Israel. The inflatable contraption weighs about 20 pounds and can fit into a backpack, but Aiko is working with SBK to "evolve the design and price." With any amount of luck, the $1000 device will become an affordable, exciting, and legitimate solution to the growing problems of public transit across North America. I know here in Toronto, it would be nice to simply have a bike lane that stays put.
