U.S. Neo-Nazi Movement in 'Significant Decline'

According to the ADL, the neo-Nazi movement is at its "lowest ebb since the 1970's"

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which monitors extremist groups in the US, has declared the neo-Nazi movement in the United States to be in significant decline, as stated in a recent post on their official blog.

The National Alliance (NA) is a neo-Nazi group that once topped the ADL's list of the most dangerous hate groups in the country. According to a statement from the ADL, the group is suffering "flagging membership, reduced revenue streams and few remaining supporters."

Marilyn Mayo, co-director of the ADL’s Center on Extremism, issued a press release stating, "The near-total collapse of the National Alliance indicates a significant change in the neo-Nazi movement in the US. [the NA is] not attracting many new members... While other extremist groups... continue to experience growth in the US, the neo-Nazi movement is at its lowest ebb since the 1970′s."

Leader of the National Alliance, Erich Gliebe, sent out a letter in September, saying that the group is ending their membership program, and asking all current members to convert their dues into donations.

Evidence indicates that this is an attempt to save face in the wake of what the ADL terms "poor judgment and apparent financial mismanagement" of the group. However, Gliebe insists that this is a "step forward for the organization and part of a creative new concept for the Alliance that would lead to a brighter future."

Former member of the NA, Jim Ring, pins the blame for the decline of the Alliance squarely on Gliebe himself. In an interview for the anti-Semitic conspiracy-oriented newspaper, the American Free Press, Ring called Gliebe both "incompetent and dishonest" and "claimed Gliebe personally profited from the sale of [NA founder William] Pierce’s gun collection, and timber on the NA property."

Under Pierce's leadership, until his death in 2002, the National Alliance membership was said to be about 1,500, with more than 35 cells that were active in about 30 states. Since Gliebe's succession, the Alliance has become factional, and has ceased publication activities, as well as the once-profitable music label Resistance Records. The National Alliance's property in West Virginia has also been offered for sale.

The ADL's official blog post summarizes, "Gliebe’s moves may well mark the endgame for the National Alliance."
