Earlier today, a Russian advocacy group has announced its recommendation to nominate President Vladimir Putin for the distinguished Nobel Peace Prize, despite the fact that over the past year, many argue Russia's image in the public eye has become increasingly negative - Putin has been under scrutiny for alleged ties to Syrian President Bashar Assad, and for supporting and supplying arms to the Assad regime during the war against Syrian rebels.

And also, the whole denying members of the LGBT community basic human rights thing, which many have claimed is evocative of the Nazi's treatment of the Jews leading up to the Holocaust.

Both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have compared Putin's leadership over Russia to past dictators of the Soviet Union.

Now, according to The Independent, the Russian President has indeed been nominated for the award, but, being a 'modest' person, has refused to comment.

The Russian advocacy group the International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation of Peoples of the World, claimed Putin is more deserving of the award than U.S. President Barack Obama, who won the award in 2009, according to the New York Times.

"Barack Obama has the title of Nobel Prize winner — the man who initiated and approved such aggressive actions on the part of the United States of America as in Iraq, Afghanistan, some others, and now is preparing for invasion of Syria," said Iosif Kobzon, a well known Russian singer and member of Parliament at the news conference. "I think our president, who is trying to stop the bloodshed, who is trying to help to resolve this conflict situation through a political dialogue, through diplomatic language, deserves this title more."

Interestingly, the group was not the first to nominate Putin for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. Sergei Komkov, President of the Russian Foundation for Education, made a bid for Putin earlier this year, writing that the Russian President "has made every effort to maintain peace and tranquility in his own state and has actively contributed to peaceful settlement of any conflicts arising on the planet."

There's even a website called 'We the People' that has initiated a petition to get President Obama to give his 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to Putin.
