An offensive caricature published by the Belgian Education Ministry

The Belgian Education Ministry has been on the receiving end of a lot of negative attention since they authorized the publication of an offensive and derogatory cartoon that compares Israel to the Nazis.

The cartoon, by Brazilian artist Carlos Latuff, was published on a website of the Belgian education ministry and was reportedly part of a training exercise for teachers.

After being exposed by a local Jewish newspaper, Joods Actueel, the cartoon has since been removed.

The cartoon was published on the website KlasCement.be, a well-known teaching resource website that offers training to teachers involved with the Education Ministry of the Flemish Region, a part of the federal Belgian state, according to a report by JTA.

Teachers were asked to analyze the cartoon, and were given the choice to accompany it with one of three statements: "This is a Palestinian fleeing Jews"; "Jews want the entire area of Palestine back"; or "Jews call Palestine Israel."

The offensive caricature depicts a Jewish man during the Holocaust (yellow Star of David, pin striped attire and all) struggling to get free but caught on a fence underneath the caption 'never again', beside a seemingly Arab man underneath a caption that reads 'over again'.

Each man's body is manipulated to represent a swastika.

The Jewish Monthly reports the caricature first appeared at a Holocaust denial conference in Tehran four years ago. The artist, Carlos Latuff, has received much criticism from the Jewish community, and has been accused by the Simon Wiesenthal Center of being openly anti-Semitic.

Latuff has denied the claims.

According to an annual report released last month, anti-Semitism has been on the rise in Belgium, with the highest number of anti-Semitic attacks reported since 2009.
