Grand Theft Auto 5

Ladies, as you walk along the streets and notice a severe absence of men aged 15-40, don't fear. There hasn't been a plague that's only affected the unfairer sex; we're simply at home playing video games.

But not just any video game, the big kahuna of them all, the one which will usher in a new era of sophisticated gameplay all while leaving you with that thick sense of nostalgia, as you recall playing Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 in your parents basement all night long.

Grand Theft Auto V launched yesterday, and the outpour on news sites, facebook, twitter, instagram, and the like has been gargantuan. Analysts predict the game will bring in $1 billion US in sales in the first month alone.

And gentlemen, while you get to know your avatars, whether Franklin, Michael or Trevor, and roll around the streets of Los Santos in that pearl white Audi you hijacked from some shmendrick in a suit, listening to a tight selection of tunes [we've come to expect no less from the fellas at Rockstar Games], you can take solace in the fact that this eclectic, though hip-hop-heavy, soundtrack was curated by Jewish rap star/producer, the Alchemist.

And what a soundtrack! For those of you who haven't purchased the game (yet), you can head on over to Spotify, where the entire 86-song compilation is streaming, including jams from 2pac, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Britney Spears, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Robyn, Aphex Twin, Snoop Dogg, All Saints, Pet Shop Boys, and much more.

Developed by U.K.-based Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto has played a serious influence on pop culture, perhaps the most important video game of the millennial generation. Since the original came out in 1997, the series has sold well over 125 million copies, with each game becoming more progressive, detailed, and elaborate, whether regarding graphics or the storyline.

When GTA3 (2001) brought the game to the realm of the third dimension, it helped bring "the industry to mature into the large, sprawling and much more sophisticated business that is today," according to strategic innovation consultant Scott Steinberg of TechSavvy Global.

"What Grand Theft Auto did was helped establish how sophisticated games could be — that they weren't just for teenage males," he adds.

The initial appeal in Grand Theft Auto is the ability for average people to escape the sometimes mundane, for regular, good people to 'break bad' and become violent, steal cars, break things, and engage in activities that brings you further into the criminal underground, things you wouldn't normally do in the real world.

CBC brings our attention to Kotaku's Stephen Totilo who calls the new edition "an incredible feat of engineering. It is such an immersive, cinematic experience, that when you park a car in the game, you can hear the rattle of the engine cooling."

That, among other aspects, is what defines GTA: the cinematic experience and 'Hollywood-style production' (according to IGN Editor in Chief Steven Butts). It's like watching an epic film, and you're the protagonist.

"GTA was ahead of the curve, because it embraced the villainous protagonist, the socially reprehensible protagonist, earlier than a lot of current TV shows," adds Totilo. I'm assuming he's referencing Breaking Bad here.

Grand Theft Auto is a pioneer in gaming, allowing users to explore worlds, commit petty crimes and avoid police cruisers, and engage in dangerous missions while listening to a wonderful selection of curated music. GTA5 follows the path of its predecessors, with a more engaging storyline, meticulous attention to detail, and an impeccable variety of motor-vehicles for you to hijack.

"You're playing three games at once and basically creating an interactive ensemble TV drama," says Totilo. "You can hop from one character to the next. I've not experienced anything like this in an interactive form before."

Purchase Grand Theft Auto 5 at your local electronics store today. Isn't it time you cashed in those sick days at the office?
