Zuckerberg to US Government: 'You Blew It'

While at the Tech Crunch Disrupt in San Francisco yesterday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg called out the American government for the recent NSA scandal that involved sending raw intelligence and personal data of American citizens to Israel.

"Frankly, I think the government blew it," he said during a panel discussion at the esteemed tech conference. "I think they did a bad job balancing those things here."

"We take our role very seriously," he added. "It’s our job to protect everyone who uses Facebook. It’s our government’s job to protect all of us, our freedom and the economy. They did a bad job at balancing this."

Whereas many young CEO's have remained silent on the NSA scandal, Zuckerberg came out guns blazing, highlighting the importance of preserving human rights for all Americans, particularly privacy, and stated that Facebook will embark on a new campaign to promote transparency.

He also mentioned his irritation at the fact that Facebook is not allowed to disclose to the public how many NSA requests it grants and denies. Last month, according to Forbes, Facebook stated that since January they've received approximately 12,000 requests from the government to provide them with information regarding Facebook users.

Zuckerberg stated that average American citizens should have the right to now about government programs, and that the government's response to the scandal - that they are only spying on non-American citizens - does not bode well for American startups trying to achieve international status.

"The morning after this started breaking, a bunch of people were asking them what they thought," he said. "[They said] don’t worry, we’re not spying on any Americans. Wonderful, that’s really helpful for companies trying to work with people around the world. Thanks for going out there and being clear. I think that was really bad."
