The JTA repots that Lukasz Szczygielski, a Polish photographer, has apologized for a photo shoot he conducted with a half-naked model in a Jewish cemetery in Checiny, a city in southern Poland.

"I wanted to draw attention to the neglect of the place. The cemetery is forgotten," said Szczygielski.

In the shoot, the model posed against headstones and was naked from the waist up, a necklace with a large cross hanging between her breasts.

Krzysztof Bielawski of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews was not pleased with this explanation, telling a local television station, TVP Kielse, that "This is not the appropriate form of drawing attention to Jewish cemeteries. I would prefer that this man rather clean up the cemetery rather than doing a naked session there."

In the same report, Szczygielski said "If it offended anyone I deeply apologize. This was not the intention of the session."

Piotr Kadlcik of The Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland also commented on the events, telling the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper that "One can draw attention to the Jewish cemetery in a number of other, far less shocking, ways."

The Jewish cemetery in Checiny has been around since the 1600s. About 150 tombstones are located there.
