A Rabbi in Westchester County, New York, has been charged with first-degree criminal impersonation, a felony in the state, after he pretended to be a police officer and pulled over a woman for apparently driving too slow.

The woman, driving a Toyota Camry, was reportedly slowing down because she was driving in a school zone.

The rabbi, 49-year-old Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski of Congregation Sulam Yaakov in Larchmont, was apparently irritated when the 24-year-old woman was driving slowly on Mamaroneck Avenue, prompting him to pull up beside her and yell "Police! Police! Pull over" as he waved a fake badge through the window, according to New York police.

Borodowski, a resident of White Plains, advised the woman to pull over at the side of the road. The woman, sensing something wasn't entirely kosher about the situation, called the police instead.

“Defendant is not a police officer and did not have the approval or authority of any police department to portray himself as such,” says the file complaint issued against the rabbi.

Borodowski was arraigned earlier today and will be released pending a court appearance in July.

Aside his involvement with Congregation Sulam Yaakov, Borodowski is also the executive director of the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan. His wife, Shira Leibowitz, is the lower school principal at the Solomon Schechter School of Westchester.

Borodowski has declined to comment at this time, as has the Skirball Center and Sulam Yaakov.
