According to recent findings conducted by the OECD (the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), Israel is ranked second amongst nations with the most educated students.

However, its schools are also the most underfunded.

As a part of its “Education at a Glance 2013” report, the OECD has tied Israel and Japan for second place, showing that 46 percent of Israelis aged 25-64 boast college/university degrees.

Despite the upswing, the report also reveals Israel’s education system funds less per student than it did in the past and it is failing to compensate and reward Israeli teachers for their efforts in the same capacity as other nations.

The report discloses an average Israeli teacher only earns 71 percent of the salary pocketed by his/her fellow foreign educators.

The cash-starved Israeli education system is also thrashing the students. The report discovers that classrooms throughout the country were more crowded than those in other OECD countries. Israeli classrooms are currently spilling over, with six pupils more per class than the average affiliate states.

After the report was released, opposition leader Shelly Yachimovich lamented over the economic practices led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yair Lapid. She ascribed the grim facts in the report as “a direct result of a policy of harsh budget cuts in the system over the decade in which Netanyahu ruled,” as stated by The Times of Israel.

Taking first place in the survey was Canada, a nation that prides itself on its reputation in academics. It found that 51% of Canadians aged 25-64 possess a college or a university degree, according to The Windsor Star.
