The Foreign Ministry in Uzbekistan has approved the appointment of two Israeli females to serve in the Muslim country's capital city of Tashkent.

Carmela Shamir will make history by becoming the first Israeli female ambassador to serve in a Muslim country, as well Hagit Mualem, who will serve as her deputy ambassador.

Currently 95% of Uzbekistan's population is Muslim. The country borders with Afghanistan and is fairly close in proximity to Iran.

Islam Karimov, who has remained President of Uzbekistan since the Soviet dissolution of 1990, will meet with Ambassador Shamir shortly to review her credentials.

Both Shamir and Mualem are esteemed, highly respected candidates, says the Foreign Ministry Service.

"Currently there are 12 women who serve as heads of Israeli missions abroad, and additional female envoys are due to begin their service abroad soon," said senior Foreign Ministry official Yossi Regev.
