Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird is currently in Jerusalem undergoing a series a high-level meetings, including one with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss advancing the recent Strategic Partnership Agreement announced during Baird's visit to Israel in April.

The men also discussed various other pertinent international and local issues, including the crises in Iran and Syria. During the meeting, Baird reiterated Canada's unrelenting support of Israel's rights to defend itself, and to exist as a peaceful, democratic nation. He also spoke as an advocate of any system of peace that could be arranged between the Israelis and Palestinians

Netanyahu greeted Baird with the words, "It is a real pleasure to welcome you again to Jerusalem."

He also went on to claim his support of Canada's decision last month to impose a total trade ban on Iran. "Prime Minister Harper should be praised for his important leadership on this crucial issue. Today, it is imperative to continue that pressure," said Netanyahu.

"We are obviously following the aftermath of the election very closely," replied Baird.

The Foreign Affairs Minister continued: "Canada has the toughest sanctions in the world and we have no intention of changing those sanctions until the Iranian regime changes course. This is an opportunity, and we trust in the coming days and weeks we will see the beginning of a change of course from the regime in Tehran. We think that is tremendously important. But until they change course by action, the international community must stand together for strength and resolve to ensure that they do take a different path, the path that the United Nations is calling for them to do so."
