Israel Celebrates Yom Ha’atzmaut: 65 has Never Looked So Good!

President Obama Sends Birthday Wishes to Shimon Peres

Despite uncharacteristic cold, rain and wind, more than one million Israelis celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut on Tuesday, many of whom did so by taking their families to the nearest national part where they sang, danced, and lit up their barbecues for a day – and a night – of jubilation.

And, As Israelis – and Jews around the Diaspora – celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Jewish state, a number of world leaders took the time to send letters of congratulations to Israeli President Shimon Peres.

In his letter to President Peres, US President Barack Obama wrote, "I was deeply honored to have the opportunity to visit Israel just a few week ago and to witness first-hand the deep and everlasting bond between our countries."

The President then went on to wish Israel a happy birthday in a formal statement:
"On the 65th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, I join my fellow Americans in wishing the Israeli people a joyous Independence Day. On this date 65 years ago, the Jewish people realized their dream of the ages -- to be masters of their fate in their own sovereign state.

"From that moment on, a free and independent Israel has had no greater friend and ally than the United States. As I said during my visit to Israel last month, our two nations stand together because it makes our countries safer, stronger and more prosperous and it makes the world a better place.

"Among the many memories I will always cherish from my visit will be my time at Mount Herzl. There, I was honored to pay tribute to Theodor Herzl who did so much to realize the dream of an independent Israel, to the presidents and prime ministers who guided her, and to those in uniform who have laid down their lives to protect her.

"The strong and prosperous Israel we see today proves Herzl's vision -- 'if you will it, it is no dream.' On this anniversary, we reaffirm the unbreakable alliance between our two nations and our shared determination to realize the dreams of our people to live in security and peace."

Among the other leaders to send their congratulations to the Jewish state was new Pope Francis who sent his letter to Israel via Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, who is the Vatican's liaison to Israel. "At the beginning of my Pontificate," the Pope wrote, "l gladly invoke upon you and all the people of Israel the blessings of the Most High."

And, Israel even received birthday wishes from a voice from the past, as Sarah Palin, who served as the 9th Governor of Alaska, from 2006 to 2009 posted her wishes on the Sarah Palin Information Blog.

“Today Israel celebrates the 65th anniversary of its Independence Day. We at SPIB want to wish our Mideast ally and friend a happy Independence Day! The modern State of Israel represents the culmination of 4000 years of Jewish history, beginning with God’s covenant with Abraham. It also represents the fulfillment of prophecy,” read the blog.
