Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) was marked on Monday, April 8.

At 10 a.m. in Israel, a two-minute siren sounded throughout the country. Everywhere, people fell silent and stood in memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis. Traffic halted on major highways as drivers pulled over and got out of their cars to honor the siren.

In the Knesset, the names of Holocaust victims were read out throughout the day.

The main ceremony took place at Yad Vashem the evening before. Six Holocaust survivors, representing the six million victims, each lit a torch.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Shimon Peres said that “the Holocaust will not sink in history's gaping hole. It is here with us, blazing and real... It must serve as a constant warning to all of humanity.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also spoke at the ceremony, honored the 192,000 Holocaust survivors who live in Israel today. “The survivors are the symbol of revival. They deserve to live the rest of their days in peace, security and dignity.” Every month, around 1,000 survivors pass away.

In Poland, Yom Hashoah was marked by the March of the Living. Some 10,000 people from around the world walked from the Auschwitz to the Birkenau death camps. The march was led by a delegation of senior IDF officers, headed by Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz.

More than 700 participants from Canada, mostly high school students and young adults, took part in the march. In Poland, the group is visiting a number of towns and villages that were once vibrant centers of Jewish life, as well as the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek and Treblinka. After spending a week in Poland, the group will travel to Israel to witness the rebirth of the Jewish nation in its ancient homeland.

Yom Hashoah was also marked in Canada. Observed Hank Rosenbaum, co-president of the Canadian Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants, “We remember not only the unspeakable evil perpetrated against the Jewish people, but also the incredible acts of heroism by those non-Jews who saved Jewish lives. We remember with deep respect and admiration the hundreds of thousands of survivors who, with quiet strength, rebuilt their lives and flourished here in Canada, Israel and around the world.”

Canada was recently appointed to lead the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. This places Canada at the forefront of efforts to fight anti-Semitism and to help ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten.

Israel’s Yom Hashoah takes place on the Hebrew date of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is marked worldwide on January 27, the date of the liberation of Auschwitz.
